Commission FAQs
Q: Do you take commissions?
A: Yes! I take on commissions that fit with my style and preferred subject matter.
Q: What types of commissions do you accept?
A: I am most interested in painting places that people spend time in. This includes buildings (interiors and exteriors) and outdoor spaces. Regardless of the subject matter, I look for scenes that have high contrast between light and shadow.
Q: What size is the painting?
A: My standard size is a 7x9” painting on 9x12” watercolour paper. There is flexibility based on the dimensions of the reference photo, but I generally don’t venture beyond 9x12” paintings.
Q: What type of paint do you use?
A: I paint all of my commissions in gouache, which is opaque watercolour. Occasionally I will do an oil painting, but not for commissions. It simply takes too long.
Q: How much do you charge?
A: Commissions start at $300 for a standard 7x9” gouache painting on 9x12” watercolour paper. This is usually the final price, unless the painting is particularly complex or larger in size. A 50% deposit is required in advance.
Q: Is there anything you do not paint?
A: I don’t accept portrait commissions, and I generally don’t include people in my paintings at all. I also avoid painting pet portraits, unless the overall scene fits into my style.
Q: How long does a commission take?
A: I require approximately 3 weeks to complete a commission. This does not include shipping time, and it is dependent on whether or not I have other commissions or projects.
Q: Do you need a reference photo?
A: Yes. Because my style of painting is rooted in realism, I require a reference photo to work from. If you are looking to commission a painting of a place within Vancouver, however, I am often able to take reference photos for you. This may extend the timeline for completion.
Q: I’m happy with your requirements and pricing. How do I request a commission?
A: Please email me at lyndatierneyart@gmail.com. In your email, include the following:
- What you are looking to have commissioned (a house, a landscape, etc.)
- Any timeline or deadline requirements
- Your reference photo, if available
- Any other information that may influence the final painting.
I am grateful for all commission requests, even those I am unable to fulfil. Please understand that I take on very few commissions in an effort to avoid burnout. It is critical to my own well being and art practice that I focus on painting things that resonate with me and my style. For this reason, I cannot accept every commission, but I thank you for your interest.
